Civil Rights Activist, Author, and philanthropist, Ruby Nell Bridges was born in Tylertown, MS on September 8, 1954.
In 1958 many southern cities began instituting aptitude testing for blacks to be able to attend all Caucasian schools. Her family left Mississippi for New Oleans, Louisiana that year.
On November 14, 1960, at 6 years old, Ruby Bridges made history by being the first African American to attend an “all-white” elementary school. Tha charged racial climate made it necessary for her to be escorted by Federal Marshalls to ensure her safety.
